Operations & Sustainability

State-of-the-art equipment. Industry-leading sustainability practices.

Sustainability isn’t just about managing our forestry operations; it’s about how we manage our entire business. It starts in the woods with the most modern silviculture and harvesting techniques, guided by our own professional foresters to ensure we take only what we need and what we know we can use and sell.

We take great pride in operating a zero-waste facility. Bark and shavings from both the sawmill and the planer mill operations are used as components to make up the Biomass. They are also sold as bark mulch to landscapers and shavings as bedding to farmers.

We also burn biomass in our own co-generation facility, providing power to our entire operation and to homes and businesses within a 30 km radius.

For us, sustainability also means providing stable employment and economic benefits to the local economy. We’ve been a mainstay in the community for more than 70 years and our eyes are always on the future for new opportunities.

Saw Mill

Random length, variable sizes

Our sawmill processes incoming timber into lumber of various standard sizes for customers. As part of our zero-waste operation, all cutting residue is sent to the chipping plant for further processing or burned to produce electricity at our Biomass co-generating plant.

Planner Mill

Milling construction grade, premium and cylinder-ready lumber of the highest quality.

We produce varying sizes from 1×3 to 6×6, in construction grade, premium and cylinder-ready lifts. Chips and shavings are processed for sale or burned to generate electricity to power our mill.

Pallet Plant

Producing high quality pallets for commercial and industrial use.

Lower grade lumber gets new life through our value-added processing as pallets for commercial and industrial use. It’s just another example of how we maximize efficiencies, minimize waste and create value out of every piece of wood.

Power Plant

Producing clean energy to power our operations and the community.

Since the mid 1990s, we’ve been recycling and burning biomass in our own co-generation plant. 100% of our day-to-day operating energy needs are supplied by the power plant. The remaining energy is supplied back to the grid to power homes and businesses within a 30 km radius of our mill. Our wood burning facility is equipped with advanced technology that burns the off-gas a second time, ensuring the only thing coming from our stacks is water vapour.

Dry-kiln

Producing kiln dried lumber to regional, national and international industry standards.

Taylor Lumber operates two dry-kiln machines with a combined capacity of 150,000 FBM. Our lumber meets Maritime Lumber Bureau as well as Canadian and North American standards for quality and moisture content.

Forest management

Planning carefully, harvesting responsibly, replenishing for future generations.

The days of clear cutting and moving on are long gone. We work diligently with wood contractors and our professional forestry staff to develop forestry plans including soil testing, tree density studies and wildlife surveys before any cutting begins. We comply with all government regulations and use environmentally beneficial silviculture practices including tree planting and thinning as part of our forestry management processes. We have purchased machines to reduce the footprint of our harvesting even further.

Chipping plant

Pulpwood and excess trimmings are processed and sold as chips to the pulp and paper industry. It’s not recycling; it’s upcycling to a high quality value-added product. Chipping residue is also used as fuel to generate clean electricity at our Biomass co-generation plant. Nothing goes to waste at Taylor Lumber.
